Shapeless: Paper and a Beetroot.

Using it

Carry it anywhere in your inventory. A food or dish's tooltip, and the held-item card (key H), gain a line like "Test strip: Toxin: 0.5 Qu/mB". It reads in quarter steps, so it tells a trace from a lot and no more.

It reads toxin only. Heat does not clear a toxin, and your senses do not show one until it is deep in the food, so this is how you check a dish before you eat it. A live organism (cooking cures it) already shows on the tooltip; the strip does not read it. You can also bite the food and find out the hard way.
