Hearth

A brick pan that keeps the Tool Table hot. Stock cooling in the table's cells while you play a long forging pattern is the problem it solves.

B is a Brick.

Using it

Set it on top of a Firebox (or any fire below it, lava included) and put a Tool Table against one of its sides. Light the fire. The pan warms toward the flame and never passes it: open to the air it settles a little under the fire's heat, and a Bellows on the firebox raises it as it raises any vessel.

While the pan is hot, hot-working stock lying in the table's cells (steel and the like) is pulled toward the pan's heat, a few percent of the gap each tick, so cold stock warms quickly and warm stock barely at all. It cools the other way as ever, so stock settles a little under the pan and never over it. Planks, stone and other cold-worked stock are not heated.

  • Stock left in too long can get hotter than the metal's working window; the table then refuses it until it cools.
  • It has no screen and holds nothing. It wears from nothing.
  • A hot pan burns a bare hand like any hot block: wear gloves or leave it alone.
