Insulation

Packed terracotta and wool. Build it against a Crucible and the crucible loses less heat to the room.

Crafting

T W
W T

T is Terracotta and W is any Wool. Makes two.

Using it

Place insulation blocks touching the crucible's sides. Each one cuts the heat the crucible loses to the room by 20% (multiplying: four blocks leave about 41%), up to four. Jade shows "Insulated on N sides."

What it does

  • The crucible settles closer to its fire's temperature.
  • It holds its heat longer when the fire goes out or the air is cut.

What it can't do is make the crucible hotter than its fire. If you need more heat, you need a hotter fire (Powered Bellows).

Is it always better?

No. Insulation makes a crucible slower to cool. If your process overshoots, an insulated crucible takes longer to come back down. Holding a steady band for a long time (steel) loves insulation. A job that needs the temperature to drop on cue (tempering) may want Dampers instead, or as well.

Insulation only works on crucibles; the furnaces are built as one sealed wall already.
